WIU Awards First Renewable Energy Degree

Among the Western Illinois University Students who graduated in December was the first who earned a degree in renewable energy.

Alan Steele of Milan, received his degree in Renewable Energy and Wind Technology.
He’s the first of 15 students currently working on their degrees, 5 of which will graduate in the spring.

New Data Shows Higher Incomes in the Tri States

Recent numbers indicate the economy might be picking up steam in the tri states.
The Illinois Department  of Commerce and Economic Opportunity reports per capita personal income in McDonough county rose five-percent…and it increased seven-percent in Hancock County.

Simon Pushes for College Affordability

Illinois’ lieutenant governor wants more done to ensure a college education remains affordable. Democrat Sheila Simon is taking her message around the state as she visits each of the 12 public universities in Illinois.

“I do want to make sure that the state understands the value of investment in public higher education. That we still recognize the investment in higher education as the best economic development investment we can make,” said Simon during her stop at Western Illinois University.

Western Illinois University celebrated its founding by looking ahead to its future.  The annual Founder's Day ceremony was highlighted by President Jack Thomas, who delivered a 20 minute speech with the theme “Let Us Not Forget.”

“Let us not forget that we have an excellent history of providing access to a wide range of students, and we must remain an institution that is affordable,” Thomas said, adding that he considers WIU affordable when compared to peer institutions.

By bringing internationally renowned speakers to campus, the University Theme offers students, faculty and community members the opportunity to enjoy candid and personal interactions with world leaders. Discussions that begin with the lectures often continue days and weeks later in residence halls, coffee shops and classrooms.
