On a beautiful, sunny, late February Sunday, I worked with my parents to put up a basketball net for my son, Jack's, ninth birthday. I knew this was a gift Jack would use daily. And sure, enough, the morning after his birthday, he was out back, shooting baskets at 6:39 a.m.

Western Illinois University Women's Basketball Coach J.D. Gravina is elated. Many coaches go a whole career without making it to the NCAA tournament. He's made it in just his sixth year at Western, which is his first Division I head coaching job.

When the night has come, And the land is dark, And the moon is the only light we'll see, No I won't be afraid, Oh I won't be afraid, Just as long as you stand, stand by me – Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me.”

A group of Western Illinois University alumni – many of them African-American – stood by one another and helped one another get through college more than five decades ago, a time when the campus was just beginning to diversify.

Western Illinois University's new athletic director marks both consistency and change.  Consistency, in that Matt Tanney was the choice announced this week after serving in an interim capacity since May 2015. The change is the position will now report directly to the President instead of the Vice President of Student Services.

But things have changed this year.  The team has enjoyed a lot of success, and will play a special invitational game known as a “Bracketbuster” tomorrow night against Cleveland State.

Western Illinois University has a new football coach who has a history of turning around struggling programs.

Much of the action for the Western Illinois University Athletics Department takes place on the field. But one of the highlights this weekend happens off the field.

The 23rd Annual Purple and Gold Auction will be held Saturday at Western Hall. The silent auction begins when the doors open at 5:00 pm. Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm. The silent auction is scheduled to conclude at 7:45 pm, which is when the regular auction starts.

Trips, sports memorabilia, and other goods will be offered.
