Sullivan Seeks to Refinance State Debt

State Sen. John Sullivan

State Senator John Sullivan plans to try again to get approval of his plan to refinance the state's massive backlog of bills.

The Rushville Democrat said the state must pay its vendors in a timely manner.  He said it also has a duty to reduce its debt.

He said, “I'm working with my colleagues, talking to them about, at least, if we can't do the full amount let's look at something less that makes sense.”

Kearns Talks Hospital, Prison Funding

State Representative Jerry Kearns (D-Keokuk)

A proposal in Des Moines could result in more money for Keokuk Area Hospital.

Rep. Jerry Kearns (D-Keokuk) has filed legislation asking the Iowa Department of Human Services to recalculate one of its hospital funding formulas.

He says the state makes money available to hospitals that do not receive adequate reimbursement for care of low income patients.

Kearns says that state funding can be used to leverage even more federal money.

No Permit for South Morgan Acres Hog Farm

Opponents of a proposed large-scale hog farm in McDonough County can breathe a sigh of relief - at least for now.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture declined to issue a permit to South Morgan Acres, LLC, which would be built in the northwest part of the county. The state said it required more information about the farm.

In a letter sent to the owners on February 3, the Agriculture Department said:

Sustainability Brownbaggers at WIU

This semester's Sustainability Brownbaggers at Western Illinois University will begin by focusing on food-related issued.

Timothy Collins, Assistant Director of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at WIU, helped organize the series. He said the first brownbagger is titled “Local Food Possibilities and Issues.”

Districts Will Make Case for More Transportation Money

West Prairie Supt. Jonathan Heerboth

A West-Central Illinois educator says the state's rural school districts will make a case to state lawmakers to stop cuts in transportation funding.

Governor Pat Quinn cut transportation funding by $89 million in July. The cuts caught school districts by surprise.

Some,  like West Prairie, were able to use transportation funds saved from previous years.
