Carthage Park Needs Modernization

WOW Park

The World of Wonder Park has provided outdoor fun for children in Carthage for nearly 20 years. It's started to show  its age. The board for the private park wants to give it a facelift.

Superintendent to Meet With HS Administration

The Burlington School District is looking into a note left on multiple cars following the recent high school graduation ceremony.

It’s been reported that the note mentioned bullying, intimidation and miscommunication by teachers towards students at the high school.

The signature was from the “Graduating Class of 2012.”

Cost Rising for New SRC Campus in Macomb

The current SRC campus in Macomb
Rich Egger

The State of Illinois has yet to provide funding to help Spoon River College build its new campus in Macomb, and the longer it takes the more expensive the project becomes.

Brett Stoller, SRC Vice President of Administrative Services, said both the state and the college will have to come up with more money.

“The total project goes up 2.7% (per year), and so our 25% share of that automatically goes up also,” Stoller said.

The estimated cost is now $16,278,800.  SRC is asking the state for $12,209,200 and will provide a local match of $4,069,600.

Board members have discussed filling the seat. But board president John Hemmingway told fellow commissioners this month that it is time to end the search.

He said, “The president asks for consent that, failing anybody stepping forward to volunteer, that we proceed without actively soliciting a fifth member for the remainder of that term.”

Burlington Accepts Animal Shelter Bid

An expansion and renovation of the Burlington Animal Shelter could get underway this summer.

The city council voted 3-2 to hire Myers Construction to do the work.  The $820,000 bid from the firm out of Sperry, Iowa was the lowest of the three received by the city.

Burlington will split the cost of the project with the Des Moines County Humane Society.  The organization has raised more than $500,000 for the shelter since its fundraising campaign began in 2010.
