Fertilizer Plant Meeting Likely

Lee County now knows some of the concerns residents have about the production plant Iowa Fertilizer Company plans to build near Wever.

Lori Beckert lives between Wever and Fort Madison.  She attended the Lee County Board of Supervisors meeting on Oct. 2 for one reason.

Beckert asked the board for a special meeting in Wever about the fertilizer plant so residents and future neighbors can get answers to their questions.

The supervisors said they wanted to see a list of questions/topics for the meeting before they would set a time/date/location.

The University of Iowa Press chooses two winners each year for the Iowa Short Fiction Awards. One of the winners this year is Chad Simpson of Knox College.

Simpson received the 2012 John Simmons Short Fiction Award. As part of the honor, the University of Iowa Press just published Simpson’s collection of short stories Tell Everyone I Said Hi.

Simpson said his stories often take a somber tone.

“What gets me started writing a story usually is an image that I want to get to, and in order to get to that image I have to find a kind of tone,” Simpson said.

Monmouth Wins Broadband Innovation Money

Monmouth will receive $10,000 from the inaugural Illinois Broadband Innovation Fund. The state received 113 applications for the grant program. Just 14 winners were selected.

Monmouth Director of Community Development Paul Schuytema said his city was the only municipality chosen.

“That’s pretty exciting, and to be a municipality that’s not like Chicago but a little bitty town of 9,400 people in the cornfields, it’s a great honor,” Schuytema said. “We’re looking forward to delivering some good work and sharing it.”

Big Campaign Push by Macomb Public Library

Money from Andrew Carnegie helped build the Macomb Public Library building more than 100 years ago. Now the library board is asking you for money so the building might last another 100 years.

A fundraising effort called “Campaign for the Future” is being launched to build an addition. An old building was connected to the library years ago to provide more space but Board President George Wanamaker said it is insufficient.
