Illinois Tourism Sets Another Record

There were more than 100 million visitors to Illinois in 2013. State agencies aim to grow those numbers more in the face of budget cuts. 

For the third year in a row, Illinois broke its own record for visitors to the state. In 2013, travelers spent $34.5 billion dollars in Illinois, according to the state's office of tourism.

Disney World isn’t just a vacation destination. Some students from Western Illinois University will be visiting the amusement parks to satisfy a class requirement.

Burlington is part of a new “Rolling Billboard” tourism campaign.

Keokuk is putting more money into tourism efforts as the city council has agreed to boost funding for the Convention and Tourism Bureau by $7,000.

The increase would bring the total for the current fiscal year to $140,000.

Tourism Director Kirk Brandenberger requested the increase based on Keokuk’s last fiscal year being its best ever when it comes to hotel-motel tax revenue.

He says the tax generated $276,000, which is up from the projected total of $260,000.

Brown is currently serving as President while Smith is the Vice President for Marketing.

Burlington Steamboat Days American Music Festival is a week-long event that takes place in the parking lot of Memorial Auditorium, along the Mississippi River.

The main stage will be open Tuesday-Sunday, which such artists as Blake Shelton, Twisted Sister and Alice Cooper.

Fort Madison Looking at Tourism Regionally

The Fort Madison City Council created a special committee to hand out the city’s hotel/motel tax revenue to specific events or organizations.

The promotion of tourism, though, does not fall on the committee.  It is handled by Fort Madison Partners.

That organization is an umbrella group that includes the Chamber of Commerce, Main Street, the Southeast Iowa Regional Riverboat Commission, and Fort Madison Economic Development Corporation.
