Common Ground for Tea and Green Parties

After Republican Eric Cantor lost his primary race to a Tea Party challenger last week, most press prophets seemed either to sympathize with the House Majority Loser as Capitol Hill’s equivalent of California Chrome losing the Belmont Stakes to little-known Tonalist or to celebrate the upset as Washington’s or the GOP’s “Transformers: Age of Extinction.”

But it’s less about the Loser – an Establishment Republican, despite his ultra-conservative bona fides – than the Virginia voters who supported Dave Brat: populists.

Dr Seuss and the Teapublicans

When U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, the first-term Texas Republican, in the run-up to the Tea Party-engineered government shutdown included in his 21-hour filibuster a reading of Dr. Seuss’ “Green Eggs and Ham,” he may have been trying to show what he has in common with everyday Americans. He actually showed his ignorance.

Farm Bill in Limbo

Congress has less than two weeks  to act before the current farm bill expires.

Dozens of federal programs are included in the bill -- everything from  crop insurance to food aid for the poor.

Spending on food aid is one of the reasons that House Republican leaders have refused  to call the measure for a vote. U-S Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) is among  many farm-state politicians of both parties who have been  critical of that decision.

Dr C.T. Vivian at WIU this week

Rich Egger's guest is Civil Rights leader C.T. Vivian, who grew up in Macomb. Dr Vivian was back in town to speak at the Dealing With Difference Institute at Western Illinois University.

Vivian was a close friend of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr. and worked alongside him during the American Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and '60s. He said the world does not change unless people get involved.
