Bipartisan Support For Earned Income Tax Credit, But Budget Stands In Way

  With less than a week remaining in the Illinois General Assembly's spring session, advocates are still working to double the state's tax credit for the working poor.

Advocates say the Earned Income Tax Credit is more effective at lifting people out of poverty than welfare or raising the minimum wage.

More than 900,000 Illinois workers receive the state's version of the EITC, which is currently worth 10 percent of the federal version of the credit.

Rep. Loebsack Visits SE Iowa

Rep. Dave Loebsack (D-IA2)

Congressman Dave Loebsack (D-IA2) says the United States should consider pulling its military forces out of Afghanistan sooner than currently scheduled. 

He says he does not have a specific date in mind for a withdrawal at this point.

“The President has already moved up his timetable from 2014 to the goal of late 2013,” says Rep. Loebsack, “I think we should move it up even sooner than that.  There is no way around that.”

Sullivan Says Lawmakers Support Vets Jobs Proposal

State Sen. John Sullivan (D-47)

State Senator John Sullivan (D-47) said Governor Pat Quinn will have to work hard to convince lawmakers to pass initiatives laid out in the  State of the State speech.

But the Rushville Democrat said one of  Governor Quinn's initiatives should receive bi-partisan support.  It's the tax credit for businesses to hire returning veterans.
