State Faces Hard Choices for Budget Reform

In his budget address, Governor Pat Quinn, said three-quarters of Illinois'  pension burden is for people who don't work for the state. It covers some of the pension costs for teachers and others who are employees of local government bodies.

State Senator John Sullivan (D-47)  said the state must bring all the stakeholders to the negotiating table to find a long-term solution to funding pensions.

New Due Date Possible for ROE Report

Illinois lawmakers hope a report on the future of the Regional Offices of Education can be completed sooner rather than later.

A commission has been formed to complete the study. Its members were originally asked to submit recommendations by August.

But that would be too late for the next state budget because Illinois' fiscal year begins July 1.

Sullivan Seeks to Refinance State Debt

State Sen. John Sullivan

State Senator John Sullivan plans to try again to get approval of his plan to refinance the state's massive backlog of bills.

The Rushville Democrat said the state must pay its vendors in a timely manner.  He said it also has a duty to reduce its debt.

He said, “I'm working with my colleagues, talking to them about, at least, if we can't do the full amount let's look at something less that makes sense.”

Sullivan Says Lawmakers Support Vets Jobs Proposal

State Sen. John Sullivan (D-47)

State Senator John Sullivan (D-47) said Governor Pat Quinn will have to work hard to convince lawmakers to pass initiatives laid out in the  State of the State speech.

But the Rushville Democrat said one of  Governor Quinn's initiatives should receive bi-partisan support.  It's the tax credit for businesses to hire returning veterans.
