Ada Bair, CEO of Memorial Hospital in Carthage, said the Rural Health Coach Program started with an internship partnership between her hospital and Western Illinois University.  She said the goal of the program is to train students and community members who can help improve the coordination between medical care providers and patients.

Researchers are trying to gain greater insights into why people experience different health outcomes.  A healthcare expert from Illinois believes those differences could be reduced through community coalitions.

Just over a year ago, Tracy Dethlefs learned she has stage 1 breast cancer. Since then, she estimates she has charted some 10,000 miles traveling from her farm near Loup City in central Nebraska to area hospitals for treatment. Every surgery, round of chemotherapy and radiation treatment was a road trip.
