The effort to raise money to pay for the restoration of the Keokuk Union Depot’s roof has reached a milestone. But there is still more work to do before the fundraising is complete.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered Wednesday afternoon to watch as workers added the roughly 26-foot steeple to the former Keokuk Union Depot along the Mississippi River. One spectator said he would not have missed it for the world.

Current and former residents of southeast Iowa are being asked to contribute to a wide variety of projects throughout the region including efforts to restore old buildings and save historic sites.  Tri States Public Radio checked in on a few of these projects this week.

Organizers are ahead of schedule in their effort to raise the money needed to match a grant that would help pay for a new roof for the Keokuk Union Depot. Debbie Marion, who chairs the Keokuk Union Depot Commission and serves on the Keokuk Union Depot Foundation, said more than $330,000 has already been pledged after less than a year of fundraising.

The Keokuk Union Depot Foundation has embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign in an attempt to land a six-figure grant from the Jeffris Family Foundation.
