The Macomb Public Library has raised half of the money it needs to qualify for a state grant, and is now being challenged by an anonymous donor to maintain the momentum.

Capital Campaign Co-Chair Judy Kerr said the donor will provide $25,000 if the library can raise the same amount between now and February 1.

“This two week period is a very short time to attempt this but I feel certain that we will reach that goal,” Kerr said.

This week on Emphasis, Rich Egger’s guests are Macomb Public Library Director Dennis Danowski and Capital Campaign Co-Chairs Melissa Inman and Judy Kerr.

They talk about the campaign to raise $794,025 by June 30, 2013. If that goal is met, the state will provide the library with a $2.38 million grant.

The nearly $3.2 million total will be used to build a two-story addition that will almost double the library’s space.

Kerr said this follows the model established when the community’s Carnegie Library was built in 1904.

Money from Andrew Carnegie helped build the Macomb Public Library building more than 100 years ago. Now the library board is asking you for money so the building might last another 100 years.

A fundraising effort called “Campaign for the Future” is being launched to build an addition. An old building was connected to the library years ago to provide more space but Board President George Wanamaker said it is insufficient.
