Time to boost the bottle bill?

The Iowa Recycling Association wants to expand the bottle bill. Under its proposal, bottled water, tea, sports drinks and other non-carbonated beverages- milk and juice being the exceptions- would be included in the bill.
For one week in 2011, a waste characterization study was conducted at the Iowa City Landfill during which officials sorted through 50 tons of incoming trash. "From couches down to cigarette butts," said Jennifer Jordan, the city's recycling coordinator.

Candidates Beat Filing Deadline

Southeast Iowa voters will have a few more choices when they go to the polls in the fall.

Five men beat the deadline to get on the general election ballot for county, state and/or federal office in Lee & Des Moines Counties.

They did so through nominating petitions or conventions.

LEE COUNTY

Former Lee County Maintenance Director Rick Carter will appear on the ballot for the District I seat on the Board of Supervisors.

He filed a lawsuit against the county after being fired in late 2010.
