I doubt that many people would disagree with me when I say big governments – those in  Washington DC and Springfield -  have not been working very well in the past few years.  Washington and Springfield seem to have a very difficult time doing anything.

The summer swimming season at Glenwood Pool wraps up this Sunday, August 13. The facility was closed for two days this week as the city addressed a recurring problem.

Only two hurdles remain before Macomb’s public swimming pool can open for the summer. Glenwood Pool must still be filled with water and it must pass a state inspection before the city and the Macomb Park District can schedule the opening day.

The Macomb Park District Board of Commissioners voted during a special meeting to withdraw from management of Glenwood Pool.  The pool is owned by the city and managed by the park district but the management pact ends on September 1.

There is about a month left in the school year and with summer on the horizon, uncertainty remains over whether Glenwood Pool in Macomb will be open this year.

Glenwood Pool in Macomb dates back to the 1940s and Park Board John Hemingway said the pool is showing its age. The pool was open for just a few weeks this summer because of various problems, and he questions whether it's worth putting more money into repairs to keep Glenwood going.

Macomb’s only public pool is now open for summer, about a month later than usual.

A routine inspection by the state, last fall, found Macomb’s Glenwood Pool had some structural problems and did not meet state standards. The issues identified center around the pool’s circulation and filtration systems as well as its drainage system.

The City of Macomb is trying to find a happy medium with identifying what the community wants in terms of the pool, as well as what they are willing to pay for.

The Macomb Park District is concerned about the operating losses at two of its facilities.

It could be another four to six months before architects offer recommendations on a new outdoor pool and indoor recreation center for Macomb.
