Low crop prices have many Midwest wheat and corn farmers looking for ways to supplement their incomes. One possibility for conventional farmers: producing food for farmers markets.

Farmers Market season is in full swing throughout the Tri State region. You can find vendors and customers in Keokuk, Fort Madison, Burlington, Quincy, Macomb, Galesburg, Monmouth, and many more communities.  The list of items for sale is just as long, from baked goods to vegetables, fresh fruit to wood carvings.

The Macomb Farmers Market is Back -- with Changes

For many years, the Macomb Farmers Market has sold fruit, vegetables, baked goods, and more on Thursdays and Saturdays from 7:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. on the courthouse square.  This year it has added Tuesdays to the schedule in June, July, and August. The Tuesday market will be open from 3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. in Chandler Park.

Macomb residents might get more opportunities to buy fresh produce and other local goods this summer. Downtown Development Director Kristin Terry proposed expanding the market from two days to three.

Macomb Farmer's Market Celebrates 40th Anniversary

The Macomb Farmer's Market celebrated its 40th anniversary this past Saturday with eighteen vendors selling homegrown fruits and vegetables.  Crafts were also sold.  King Neptune performed Piedmont-style Blues at the event.  The turnout was small because of thunder and heavy rains, but both the crowd and market gardeners were enthusiastic to be there.

Call it “peak farmers market.” Or maybe the plateau of “know your farmer.”

The USDA said farmers markets can play a significant role in strengthening local food systems by accepting SNAP benefits.
