Wes Jackson sees agriculture as a problem. That's because it requires plowing, which leads to soil erosion. It also plants large tracts of land with a single species of crop, using large-scale application of pesticides and fertilizer.

Michael Howard, Deputy Director of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, delivered the keynote address at the 11th Prairie Lands Environmental Summit on the campus of Western Illinois University in Macomb.

The annual environmental summit at Western Illinois University is now known as the Prairie Lands Environmental Summit.

The idea of sustainability is often preached by environmentalists, though it can be difficult to pinpoint the meaning of the concept.

Rich Egger’s guests on Emphasis are Jean Harman, Food Security Team Leader for the Peace Corps, and Timothy Collins, Assistant Director, Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University.

Harman will be the keynote speaker for the 10th Annual Environmental Summit at WIU, which will take place Wednesday, April 3 on the Macomb campus.

Rich Egger's guests are Mandi Green and Timothy Collins of Western Illinois University. They talk about WIU's 9th Annual Environmental Summit.

Collins, who is Assistant Director of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs, said there are numerous hot button issues among those who study sustainability, but two in particular stand out.

"Obviously energy is the one people feel the most because gasoline prices are around $4 per gallon," Collins said.
