Six girls from the Los Angeles Environmental Charter High School spent the month of July at a Nature Conservancy site just outside of Lewistown, Illinois.   The girls helped clean up the Emiquon Preserve while learning everything they could about the great outdoors.

Dickson Mounds Set to Re-Open

The small Fulton County community of Lewistown has been dealing with Dickson Mounds Museum being closed to the public since last fall  -- a closure ordered by Governor Bruce Rauner during the on-going state budget impasse.

The Emiquon Corps of Discovery describes itself as a group of volunteers trained to analyze with the mind of a scientist, see with the eyes of an artist, and speak with the words of a poet.  And that's what they've done for 10 years on the 9,000 acre Emiquon Nature Preserve along the Illinois River near Lewistown.

Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner told state museums to be prepared to close their doors.  If that happens, a long-running concert series in west central Illinois will need to find a new home.

Land in Fulton County that was farmed for more than 80 years is being returned to its original wetland state – and the early results are promising for what’s now the Emiquon Nature Preserve.

Dickson Mounds Museum near Lewistown will begin installing some new exhibits that should change the look of the facility within the next year. In addition, the museum's staff continues conducting research into the Illinois River Valley's long history.

Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon recognized two wetlands along the Illinois River for their importance to conservation. 

The Emiquon Complex near Lewistown and the Dixon Waterfowl Refuge near Hennepin received the Ramsar designation this year.  The honor highlights efforts to restore both sites to their natural states.

Before a ceremony at Dickson Mounds Museum, Simon said the international designation can help boost tourism for the region.
