The Eighth Judicial District Department of Correctional Services announced in late June that it would be canceling a series of employee contracts connected to the drug courts in Fort Madison and Ottumwa to help close a roughly $265,000 budget shortfall.

But on July 2, Lee County's weekly Drug Court looked no different than it had during any previous session.

Iowa's new budget takes effect July 1 and with it comes some big changes for the Eighth Judicial District Department of Corrections, which encompasses the southeast corner of the state.

Drug Court Offers Offenders Last Chance

The McDonough County Drug Court has begun operation. It's goal is to keep habitual drug users from going to prison by offering intense monitoring and support to help them beat their addiction.
