Ben Trane sat inside the 2nd floor courtroom of the south Lee County Courthouse, Monday morning, wearing a brown Lee County Jail jumpsuit and shackles. He was there to request the court release him from police custody while his criminal case proceeds.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) reported Wednesday that the suspect in the robbery of a Fort Madison bank was shot and killed by officers as he tried to escape.

It will be up to a judge to decide whether government and law enforcement agencies in Des Moines County violated Iowa’s open records law during an investigation into the shooting death of a Burlington woman last year.

The Burlington Police Department is saying little about the death of a teenager whose body was discovered late Wednesday night.  Kedarie Johnson, 16, was a student at Burlington High School.

There are still many more questions than answers regarding the investigation into allegations of sexual abuse at Midwest Academy, a southeast Iowa boarding school for teens. The path to finding some of those answers appears to be the legal system as the last week has been filled with court filings and hearings regarding the school.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said Thursday afternoon it is involved in an investigation of alleged sexual abuse involving a Midwest Academy staff member and a former student. Midwest Academy is a therapeutic boarding school located outside Keokuk that serves national and international students.

The Burlington Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that happened Wednesday night as a homicide.

Des Moines County Attorney Amy Beavers expects to decide within the next 30 days whether to file charges in connection with a fatal shooting by a Burlington police officer.
