Keokuk City Administrator Aaron Burnett has reached a preliminary agreement to become the next city administrator in Mason City, Iowa. Burnett said pending approval by the Mason City City Council, his last day on the job in Keokuk will be June 22.

The hiring of Aaron Burnett as Keokuk's new city administrator marked a significant change in the structure of city government, since that job had been vacant for nearly a decade. Now, city leaders are trying to make sure its rules and regulations match up with the hiring.

Aaron Burnett has not had a lot of time to sit back and relax since arriving in Keokuk as the community's second-ever City Administrator. He says his top priorities have been to get a good understanding of City Hall and the city as a whole, and to meet as many people as possible.

First Ward Alderman Mike O'Connor said the Keokuk City Council's decision to offer the job of city administrator to Aaron Burnett is a big deal for the city and its residents.  "I think we are giving the city and the people of Keokuk an early Christmas present," said O'Connor.

Keokuk appears to be on the verge of having a city administrator after nearly a decade without one.

Mayor Tom Marion is confident Keokuk will announce the hiring of its new city administrator within the next two weeks. His declaration comes as the first round of in-person interviews is set to begin.

Keokuk has gone without a city administrator since early 2008. City leaders hope to change that in the next few months.

The South Side Boat Club was the last major enhancement to the stretch of Keokuk's riverfront from the water plant to the sewer plant.  New additions are now in the works.

Keokuk Alderwoman Susan Dunek pledged to bring up the idea of hiring a a city administrator until something happens.  She said the city council would be foolish to just step back and do nothing.

The Keokuk City Council has been trying to find the money to pay for a city administrator.  It's been unsuccessful to this point, so the active search to fill the post has been placed on hold.

Dean Torreson said he will leave at the end of the year after a long career in local government.

The Keokuk City Council is gradually making progress toward the hiring of a city administrator, after not having someone in that position for seven years.

Talk about finding someone to manage day-to-day city operations in Keokuk could soon turn into action.

The idea of hiring a city administrator in Keokuk appears to be picking up steam.

It appears Tom Marion's current term as mayor of Keokuk will be his final one.
