WIU Baseball Player Killed In Crash

Macomb, IL – 21-year old Devin VanBrooker of Plymouth was killed in a traffic accident in Macomb late Tuesday night.

Police say VanBrooker and his passenger, Whitley Klingler, were heading east on West Jackson street when their motorcycle collided with a Chevy SUV turning south onto Charles street. Both were thrown from the vehicle.

VanBrooker was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he suffered from major blood loss. Klingler suffered a broken arm and femur, and was eventually airlifted to Peoria for treatment.

Passengers in the SUV say they did not see the motorcycle before making the turn. The driver, Shameka Beard-McAllister of Macomb, was cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

VanBrooker, a junior at Western, was a left-handed pitcher on the Leatherneck baseball team. Wednesday's scheduled home game against Bradley University has been canceled. No make up date has been announced.

UPDATE

Funeral arrangements have been set for VanBrooker. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Southeastern High School in Augusta. A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Camp Point. In leiu of flowers, donations may be made to WIU baseball.
