White Collar Criminals Deny Guilt

Macomb, IL – An expert on white collar crime says many such criminals have trouble taking responsibility for their offenses. Michael Benson has studied white collar crime for years. While researching the issue, he's asked those convicted of white collar offenses how they got involved with their crimes. Benson says he almost always gets a long-winded answer explaining how no crime was committed. He says this is different from many street criminals, who acknowledge breaking the law while trying to justify why it was necessary to do so. Benson says although the big corporate crimes grab the headlines, most white collar crimes are smaller and there are more of them than most people realize. Benson is a professor of criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati. He was in Macomb to participate in W.I.U.'s Ninth Annual Ethics Day in the College of Business and Technology.
