Teachers in the West Burlington School District are looking for higher pay during the 2014/2015 school year.
The West Burlington Education Association’s initial contract offer to the district calls for the base pay to be increased by nearly 9% ($2,500) to just under $32,000.
Salaries would increase exponentially based on experience and education.
The organization says this does not take into account a potential increase in benefits.
The teachers also want the option to donate sick leave to a “community pool” and to avoid working sporting events after school hours.
The West Burlington School District is expected to make its initial offer early next year.
SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER
Meanwhile, the West Burlington School District is interested in adding a law enforcement presence to its facilities.
The school board has authorized Superintendent Dave Schmitt to talk to the city about the possibility of hiring a part-time school resource officer.
He says if approved, the individual would be based at the high school but maintain visibility in all district locations.
Schmitt says it has been at least five years since the district had a school resource officer.
The discussions with the city, which are expected to begin soon, will include whether the two sides will split the cost.
Schmitt says a survey of the staff shows mixed opinions about the position as some want an officer in place now while others do not see the need.
The West Burlington School Board could vote on the hiring of a school resource officer next month.
