WB Schools to Conduct ALICE Training

The West Burlington School District is the latest in southeast Iowa to implement a plan for dealing with a violent intruder on campus.

The school board has authorized ALICE training for all faculty, staff, administrators and students.

The security program is already underway within the Burlington School District.

ALICE, which stands for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, is being implemented in school districts and office buildings throughout the U.S.

West Burlington Superintendent Dave Schmitt says the training for faculty, staff and administrators will begin Oct. 2.

Student training will get started one week later.

Schmitt says it is age appropriate, so while a high school senior could be told to confront if necessary, a kindergartner would be told to evacuate.

He says the training will coincide with current procedures.

“We are still going to go into our lockdown,” says Schmitt.  “Don’t get the idea that we are going to meet intruders at the door and take them down.”

The training will be handled by the West Burlington Police Department.

Schmitt says parents have responded well to implementing the program, but he says they can also opt their children out of the training if they don’t want them participating
