Warsaw, IL – The Warsaw Public Library opened its new facility about three years ago. The move allowed the home of city government to move to the library's former headquarters.
There are about a half-dozen steps leading up to the main entrance to city hall. Warsaw city leaders talked about the need for a wheelchair ramp, during the move, but did not make the addition.
Mayor Gary Treatch says the ramp has not been added because Warsaw does not have the money. He says the ramp could cost $8,000-$10,000.
"Funds are tight at every level," says Treatch, "it is not something we forgot about. We are working on it and if any money comes available, I am sure we will have a shot at it."
Treatch says he may ask local contractors to donate labor and materials, this spring, to get the ramp built.
The need was apparent prior to the Warsaw City Council's January 27 meeting.
Several Warsaw police officers had to help a local newspaper reporter up the front steps. The reporter has to use crutches to get around after breaking her ankle last month.

During the actual meeting, the Warsaw City Council
- announced that employees would pay about $7/month less for health insurance because of a decrease in premiums.
- agreed to let Boy Scout Troop #50 post signs announcing the date and time of regular meetings.
- accepted a new 30-year franchise agreement with Ameren CIPS. The city will no longer receive free electricity at government buildings, but will receive a check for more than $11,000 each year.
- approved the purchase of a new computer for the Warsaw Police Department.
