Visitation Halted at Iowa State Penitentiary

Visitors will not be allowed to see inmates in the maximum security portion of the Iowa State Penitentiary until further notice.

Spokeswoman Rebecca Bowker says the prison in Fort Madison remains on restricted movement following the assault of a staff member on Monday, May 19.

The unidentified individual received bruises to the face and head, but returned to work.  Another staff member was assaulted on Monday, May 12.

Restricted Movement means inmates are not allowed to leave their cells.

Bowker says the announcement about the suspension of visitation was made to keep people from traveling a long distance only to be denied access.  She says visiting hours occur Friday - Monday.

Bowker says visitors to the minimum security portion of the prison will continue as scheduled.
