TV-Anywhere Service & Copyright Law

The Shop Talk panelists talk about an appeals court ruling that Aereo does not violate copyright law. An article in Gigaom called it the biggest blow yet to the existing TV business.

Aereo’s technology allows viewers to watch and record TV on mobile devices. The Gigaom article, by Jeff John Roberts, reported that Aereo successfully argued that its “one antenna for one subscriber” operation makes it just like a personal recording tool.

Broadcasters argued that Aereo is illegally retransmitting their signals.

Aereo earlier defeated broadcasters in a US District Court in New York.

The rulings in favor of Aereo could also be seen as a victory for consumers, many of whom currently pay cable operators for bundled packages of channels that include programming a viewer might not want.
