A look back at the top stories and features from the Tri States Public Radio news department from October 2012. 

Monmouth was the only municipality to receive a grant from the inaugural Illinois Broadband Innovation Fund, the public raised more questions about Iowa Fertilizer Company’s proposed plant in Lee County, and a state panel voted to proceed with the closure of the Jacksonville Developmental Center.

Also during the month, the Macomb Public Library launched an ambitious fundraising campaign in order to win a state grant, while the Rushville Public Library made plans to build a new library knowing it can already meet the local match needed for state grant money.

Burlington celebrated the opening of a $150 million railroad bridge across the Mississippi River, Galesburg celebrated the opening of the first of its overpasses, and Argyle Lake State Park celebrated the long-awaited re-opening of its road and all its campgrounds.

Reporter Jason Parrott told us about a “Blue Ribbon” committee that hopes to ensure Missouri’s roads are well maintained, and News Director Rich Egger examined how independent book and record stores are managing to keep their doors open in small towns.
