Trash Talk in Keokuk Heats Up

Keokuk, IA – Last night's Keokuk city council meeting was filled with trash talk. A handful of residents voiced their displeasure with the city's increased enforcement of long-standing garbage codes. Darla West feels the council has not taken her ideas about hiring a private hauler seriously. Petitions with dozens of signatures of those opposed to the rules were presented to the council. City leaders say more than 85% of residents are in compliance with city garbage laws. Several aldermen say the sanitation committee will review all of the garbage options in the near future. The council did approve the first reading of a measure that would increase the can size limit from 33- to 35-gallons.
