Trash Bag Limit Debated Again

Macomb, IL – Macomb aldermen are once again debating whether to reduce the number of trash containers residents can put out each week -- and they once again appear ready to leave the number unchanged. The issue has come up each of the past several years. Each time, aldermen decided to continue allowing six containers rather than cutting it to three, which the city is allowed to do under terms of the waste contract that has one more year to go. Second Ward Alderman Ken Zahnle says residents in his ward would like to keep the number at six. His ward includes neighborhoods around the WIU campus. But Alderman At-Large Dennis Moon questioned whether the rest of the community should subsidize that part of the city. Meanwhile, Fifth Ward Alderman Tim Lobdell suggested the city maintain the current rules and work toward making changes in the next contract. When polled during this week's committee meeting, five of the seven aldermen endorsed the six container limit. They also endorsed a proposed increase in the rate charged to residents for trash collection. They'll be asked to take an official vote next week.
