Thinking Green Rather Than Purple at WIU

WIU

14 water bottle filling stations are slated to go up across the Western Illinois University campus during the 2013-14 school year.

These new stations will add to the six already in place.

The effort is led by the Facilities Management Department’s Sustainability Committee, which installed several stations a few years ago to test how well they’d be received around campus.  The university felt they proved to be successful, which led to the decision to buy more.

We've already reduced 77,000 water bottles from going to landfill

Sustainability Coordinator Mandi Green said the main goal is to reduce the amount of disposable bottles that end up in landfills, creating more waste.

“It’s a good investment to purchase a reusable water bottle,” she said, “We’ve already reduced 77,000 water bottles from going to landfill.”

Installation costs $1,000 - $2,000. Current filling stations can be found at the Spencer Student Recreation Center, the University Union, the Physical Plant, and Sherman, Tanner, and Thompson Halls.

New stations are set to go up in places such as the Malpass Library, and Morgan and Western Halls.
