Suspect in Fatal Keokuk Shooting Found Dead

The primary suspect in the fatal shooting of a woman in Keokuk early Sunday morning apparently took his own life that same day.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) said the investigation quickly led authorities to Russell Tallman, 39, of Keokuk as the person who shot and killed Carissa Rivers, 29.

Rivers was found unresponsive in an alley near N. 5th St. just after midnight on Sunday. She was pronounced dead at Keokuk Area Hospital.

The DCI said a tactical unit executed a search warrant at Tallman's residence at 2:45 p.m. Sunday. The agency said officers found Tallman's body in the basement with an apparent self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head.

The DCI did not reveal any connection between Tallman and Rivers, but it said the shooting appears to be an isolated event and that the public is not in danger.
