Spoon River to Buy New Macomb Campus

Canton, IL – Spoon River College will buy a new building to serve as its Macomb campus. The Board of Trustees has agreed to pay $1.6 million for the building that once housed the Heilig-Meyers furniture store and other businesses on East Jackson Street. Board Chairman Dave Maguire says the new building will provide about two-and-a-half times as much space to alleviate crowded conditions on the South Johnson Street campus. He says it will allow SRC to offer more career preparation courses in Macomb. In addition, it will put the college closer to firms it does training for, including NTN Bower and Pella Corporation. The almost eight-acre site will also ease what have been major parking problems at the current location. Maguire says remodeling will in part depend on what career programs are set up in Macomb. He says there will be some overlap between the opening of the new building and the final move from the current campus.
