Southeast Iowa Redemption Center's Future Still In Question

Keokuk, IA – The future of the Southeast Iowa Redemption Center remains in question. For the second time in two months, the Keokuk Board of Adjustment has tabled its review of the recycling center's special use permit. The panel was to decide whether the facility, located along Main Street, is in compliance with the terms of the permit, which was granted in January of 2005. The key issues are whether all recycling is being done within an enclosed building and if inventory is being stored in a proper container. Owner Brian Boyd says he is working to comply with the city's requirements. Early on, the review focused on the specific compliance issues and on ways to possibly clean up the facility. The matter was tabled when the discussion moved into whether the permit should have been granted in the first place. The city's attorney was not present to answer questions as to the scope of the board's authority, pertaining to the permit. The Keokuk Board of Adjustment hopes to hold a special meeting, within the next few weeks, to continue reviewing the Southeast Iowa Redemption Center's permit.
