Macomb, IL – The panelists talk about the Online News Association and its annual conference.

American Journalism Review's article previewing the conference is headlined, "For the Online News Association, the Future Is Now." The article notes the phrase "future of" was banned at this year's conference.

The Shop Talk panelists praise the idea of focusing on current technology instead of trying to predict what tools journalists will use in the future. However, they're concerned that a number of sessions seem to focus on developing efficiencies rather than better reporting skills.

AJR reports the ONA's membership grew by 18% in the past year and now stand at 2,100. The Shop Talk panelists point out the use of new media has also grown in recent years. Facebook and Twitter in particular have enjoyed immense growth.
