Macomb, IL – The panelists discuss the "First in Print" or "Only in Print" promotion touted by Gatehouse newspapers. The idea presumably is to sway on-line readers to buy a print copy of the newspaper.

The Shop Talk panelists feel this is a poor idea. They believe news organizations should integrate their stories between platforms rather than trying to compete with themselves by not offering some stories on-line.

The panelists are intrigued by the New York Times' latest plan regarding on-line content. The paper is allowing people to access 20 on-line articles per month before it starts charging them. In addition, the Times gives full on-line access to readers who subscribe to the print edition.

The early results are looking good, with profits and on-line subscribers on the rise for the NY Times. The panelists say this is evidence that people are willing to pay for distinctive and quality journalism.
