Macomb, IL – The panelists discuss the future of college radio.
The magazine Current reports some universities have sold their student station to religious broadcasters. Others have turned over operations to their public radio affiliate.
Shop Talk panelist Bill Knight is critical of universities that treat the student station as an asset that can be sold off to generate some revenue. He said the stations serve as an important learning lab for students.
Panelist Rich Egger said he learned a great deal and gained valuable experience during his years in college radio. But he wondered if students are still interested in doing shifts for a radio station.
Panelist Mike Murray said students are still interested. Murray who teaches in Western Illinois University's Department of Broadcasting, said there are not enough shifts available for every student who wants to do a program on WIU's student station WIUS, "The Dog." Murray also said college radio provides an opportunity for students to gain valuable experience.
