The panelists discuss whether Facebook attracts narcissists or turns users into narcissists.
The New York Times' Tara Parker-Pope raised the issue in a recent blog. She refers to a study by Christopher Carpenter, Associate Professor of Communication at Western Illinois University, which suggested Facebook appeals to our most narcissistic tendencies.
Shop Talk panelist Rich Egger believes Facebook attracts all types of people but might be especially appealing to narcissists. He resisted signing up for Facebook for a long time and now generally uses it to promote stories that are airing on Tri States Public Radio.
Panelist Mike Murray said Facebook probably attracts those interested in self-promotion. Murray said he has a Facebook page but generally uses it just once a week.
Panelist Lisa Kernek does not have a Facebook page. She does not like the idea of sharing her personal life on-line. However, she recognizes it could be useful as an organizational and reporting tool. She also said she might be forced to sign up because her students prefer Facebook over e-mail as a communication tool.
