A listener wrote to say she visited the CBS website to view a story the day after the earthquake. She was startled to discover she had to sit through a promotion for a CBS program before she could watch the story.
Shop Talk panelists have talked quite a bit over the years about the cost of producing news and the need to generate revenue. But is there a time when the commercials/promos should be dropped? Is there a time when news organizations should just present the information, basically as a public service?
The practice of placing ads next to breaking news stories is not new. It's happened in newspapers for many years, though a newspaper ad is not quite as "in your face" as a commercial paired with an on-line story.
