Sheriff, Board Chair Dispute Overtime

Macomb, IL – McDonough County's Board Chairman says the sheriff will go over-budget for deputy and jailer overtime. Sheriff Mike Johnson says he was not given enough in the budget for overtime, and he can not cut it without running afoul of state regulations. Chkairman Bob Harwick says the sheriff will have to pay about $41,000 more for overtime than was budgeted. Johnson says he's forced to pay more because the contract with the Fraternal Order of Police limits the number of overtime hours that can be used by part-time jailers. He says when that's used up each month, he's forced to pay overtime to the more highly-paid full-time jailers, driving up costs. He says the issue will be one of the negotiation topics in this year's collective bargaining.
