Senator Says No to Amnesty

Keokuk, IA – One Midwestern Senator does not believe Congress will approve immigration reform this year. Senator Charles Grassley says, with the Senate favoring amnesty and the House opposing it, the sides are too far apart to reach a compromise. The Iowa Republican says the fact that this is an election year does not help either. Grassley says he opposes amnesty, but would support a temporary worker program. He says the program would eventually lead to legal workers replacing illegal workers, because those who are in the country illegally would not be allowed in the program. The Senator says he voted for amnesty in 1986 because he was told it would take care of the issue. Grassley says that was a mistake he will not make again. He says it is also important for Congress to strengthen border security and to provide help to law enforcement agents.
