Road Funding for McDonough County

Macomb, IL – McDonough County will be able to do a little more work on its roads over the next few years.

County Engineer Tom Hickman says the county will receive about $75,000 each year for the next five years. "Before the bill was signed we got notification from IDOT on a split for counties," says Hickman.

Hickman says the money has to be spent on things such as roads and bridges. "Any money is a big help right now," says Hickman. "Our motor fuel tax was off this month 45%. They gave us the reasoning that there was a lot of things deducted this one month before it's distributed to the counties and the townships."

The county has 180 miles of road. 130 of that is seal coated. "This year I am going to seal coat almost 4-miles, and I am going to use sand and sand seal about 13 or 14," says Hickman. "That should save some money, because it's less oil and the sand we get for free. That's the only thing I can do."

Hickman says it costs roughly $13,500 to seal coat just 1-mile. Hickman says he will be able to seal coat an additional 5-miles with the money fro the capital bill. "I just wish there was more (money)."
