Retirement/Resignation Face Lee County

Lee County, IA – Two Lee County leaders will be stepping down within the next 15 months.

Lowell Junkins has served as the Executive Director of the Lee County Economic Development Group for nearly four years. He says his last day on the job will be December 31, 2006. Junkins says he announced his decision 15 months in advance so county leaders would have time to determine the future of the economic development organization. He says a professional team is now in place and will be able to carry on after he leaves. Junkins says he will continue to work on several projects, including the Port Authority near Keokuk, during his final 15 months.

Lee County Treasurer Mary Hoenig says she is retiring, effective December 31, 2005. Hoenig has worked in the Treasurer's office for more than 30 years, serving as treasurer since 1991. She says this is the right time to go so she can spend more time with her family and friends. Hoenig's term in office does not expire until the end of 2006. The county board would have to appoint a replacement to serve out the final year or hold a special election.
