The Red Cross Flood App

Rich Egger

Just in time for spring, theAmerican Red Cross has created something new to help when disaster strikes.

“The Flood App" is free and available for smartphone users to download in the iTunes Store and Google Play Store.

Some features include emergency preparedness tips, interactive quizzes, and a customizable “I’m Safe” message to inform family and friends during a storm. The app also provides recovery resources.

The app includes location-specific features. Users can find nearby Red Cross shelters and receive alerts from the National Weather Service for flood watches and warnings.

“It’s just one more way to keep up with technology, touch more people, and get the preparedness information in everyone’s hands,” said Amanda Stotts of the West Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri Chapter of the Red Cross.

The Flood App joins a suite of apps that have been released by the Red Cross. These include apps for natural disasters such as tornadoes and wildfires as well as general assistance apps for first aid and pets.
