Proposed Fort Madison School Awaits Public Input

Fort Madison, IA – The Fort Madison School District must hear from the public before it can move ahead with plans to build a new school. The district is considering replacing Fort Madison Middle School and Denmark Elementary School with a new building, located between the 2 communities. Superintendent Kenneth Marang says the price tag could be $17,000,000; so a bond referendum would be needed. No date, for a public vote, has been set because residents have not presented the school board with the necessary petition calling for the referendum. Marang, though, believes the petition will be delivered soon. He says, until then, the district will look to obtain land for the proposed school. Marang says the district will need about 30 acres. He says the district is looking into whether it could use its share of the revenue from Lee County's local option sales tax to help pay for future construction. That tax must be renewed before the end of 2009.
