Port Authority Answers Needed

Keokuk, IA – The Lee County Board of Supervisors may need some answers about a proposed port authority before voting to create it. The board, along with the Keokuk and Fort Madison city councils, is being asked to form the Southeast Iowa Regional Economic and Port Authority. Supervisor Bob Woodruff says the 3 panels should meet and draft by-laws and regulations for the authority before jumping ahead and signing the agreement. While all 3 panels are being asked to join, Iowa law requires just 2 political sub-divisions, such as a city or county, to be involved in creating a port authority. If Keokuk and Fort Madison both approve the measure, and Lee County chooses not too, the economic and port authority would still be formed. It would include only land in both cities. If Lee County signs on, the entire county would be included in the economic and port authority.
