Performances This Weekend of "Love, Loss and What I Wore"

11 friends will get together to showcase Nora and Delia Ephron’s play, which is based on the 1995 book by Ilene Beckerman.  The 10 cast members are women, while the lone male involved in the production is Lynn Thompson, who is directing the play.

“Originally the thought was that maybe one of them (the women) would serve as director but then they all wanted to act,” Thompson said.

“So I said, ‘If you want a pair of non-female eyes to look at it, I’d be happy to do that.’ So I ended up becoming the director.”

Love, Loss and What I Wore will be performed at the West Central Illinois Arts Center on the courthouse square in Macomb.  It begins at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 28 and Friday, August 29.

Tickets can be purchased at the door: $10 for general admission and $5 for students.

Thompson said the story deals with women’s relationships with each other, their husbands, and more.  He said the clothing serves as touchstones of their journey through life.

He said although the play is written from a woman’s perspective, it is not just for women.

“It could just as easily be guys and old flannel shirts and blue jeans they never want to give up and a pair of cowboy boots that they’ve been wearing for 25 years,” said Thompson, who said there is something for everyone in the show.

The cast members are Cathy Sheagren, Pat Robinson, Tammy Killian, Kitty Karn, Caitlyn Herzlinger, Lysa Fox, Nan Crossman, Heidi Clemmens, Carolyn Blackinton, and Amanda Banninga.

The play will be presented as reader’s theater, so the cast will sit on stools with music stands in front of them, reading the script. Thompson said that’s the way this play is intended to be performed.

“As with other pieces that are intended to be reader’s theater – Love Letters is a piece that comes to mind – it really is just about the words.”
