Packaging Needles for the Trash

Macomb, IL – Western Illinois residents are being asked to be more careful when disposing of hypodermic needles and lancets. Chad Bratz of Tri County Resource and Waste Management says trash collection workers are being stuck by needles that work their way through plastic bags. That results in a series of antibiotic treatments to make sure workers do not get a blood-borne disease. Bratz says the current recommendation is for householders to put sharp objects in a heavy-duty plastic bottle, duct-tape the lid on when full, and label the bottle Sharps. That allows sorters to incinerate the waste.
