The Office of Public Safety at WIU is preparing for a busy fall semester.

With the Western Illinois University fall semester just around the corner, the city of Macomb's population is about to double. In anticipation of this, the Office of Public Safety at WIU is using the last few weeks of summer break to prepare.Lieutenant Thomas Clark said summer is generally slow for OPS, but it allows his staff some much-needed time to train for the school year.

“We’re working closely with the university housing and dining staff and [Resident Assistants] and getting them trained. We are also going to have a staff meeting with our people get back to basics and get them squared away to start handling student calls and student issues,” Clark said.

WIU's residence halls are implementing a new guest check-in policy this fall.

He added that OPS is getting ready for the implementation of a new campus-wide visitor policy.

“Basically it requires a guest who is staying overnight in a residence hall and is not a university student to register with the front desk and let them know who they are and who they’ll be staying with,” Clark stated.

He said OPS also plans to promote its existing student escort system. The system allows students to quickly and easily request someone to walk with them on campus during the evening and night hours.

Clark said OPS is excited and ready for students to return to campus this month.
