Notification Coming After Computer Breach

Macomb, IL – Western Illinois University is preparing to notify more than 200 people of a breach of computer security. Mitch Davidson, Director of University Computer Support Services, says an outsider gained access to the campus system and could have viewed sensitive information. He says this could include names, addresses, social security numbers or credit card numbers. Davidson says the gap that allowed access has been plugged, and staff and the Office of Public Safety are investigating the incident. WIU has set up a special web page (listed on its main page) suggesting what people can do if they believe their information has been compromised. University Spokesman John Maguire says the delay in notification after the June 5 incident was to allow the University to determine what it should do. He says letters of notification should begin going out Monday.
